A little while back, Google and every other search engine introduced this thing:

AI Search Example

So when customers search for things like “building company near me” they won’t just get Google recommendations… AI will also recommend some businesses to them.

Meaning that if you can get on top of this, you’re gonna start showing up to 2X as many customers.

If you read this 3-minute article, you’ll walk out with an understanding of how to rank for AI search engines to get your business recommended to more people.

Let’s dive in.

Is GEO Similar To SEO?

Everyone’s talking about “ranking in AI” and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) like it’s a completely different game.

It’s not.

From what I’ve seen, ranking your business in AI search is very similar to ranking on Google.

In fact, most of the businesses AI tools recommend are already near the top of Google anyway.

But there are two small differences that matter:

1. GEO Prioritises Trust Even More Than SEO

Google has always cared about trust.

For example, businesses with a complete Google Business Profile and more reviews will rank higher because Google trusts them.

However… AI cares about it even more.

If an AI tool is going to recommend a business, it wants to be confident it’s pointing users somewhere reliable.

The list which AI uses for this includes:

  • Strong reviews

  • Testimonials

  • Case studies

  • A consistent online presence (posting consistently and frequently)

  • Helpful content (like blog posts answering common questions)

If your website looks thin, has no reviews, and barely explains who you are… AI won’t feel confident recommending you.

The more proof you give that real customers trust you, the more likely AI is to trust you too.

2. AI Hates Any Waffling

Here’s a simple test:

Can your business be clearly described in one sentence?

If not, you have a waffling problem.

AKA, you use more words than are necessary.

AI tools scan websites to quickly understand WHAT you do, WHO you help and WHERE you operate.

If that information isn’t obvious within seconds, you’re making it harder for both AI and humans to understand you.

AI crawls your website for only a few seconds, so if it can’t understand what your business does and for whom, AI will not recommend you.

You can do this by just writing ONE sentence clearly at the top of your website:

“We help [type of customer] in [location] with [specific service].”

Doing this removes any waffling and makes it clear for AI (and for customers!).

Because if AI can’t confidently summarise your business, it won’t confidently recommend it.

So Is GEO Different From SEO?

Not really.

Strong local SEO still matters.

Ranking well on Google still matters.

Having a fast, well-structured website still matters.

Matching info from your Google Business Profile to your website (phone number, address and hours prominently displayed) still matters.

AI is largely pulling from the same signals that Google already rewards.

The difference is that AI leans harder into authority and how clear you are.

If you focus on these 2, AI will start recommending you when customers search for your business.

And that’s only going to be more and more important in the coming months and years! That's 'is GEO similar to SEO' answered.
