99% Of Local Business Marketing Sucks

Most business owners think that they need a competitive advantage to get more clients than their competitors.
But the truth is... most of their competitors CAN'T market.
You’ll often see things like incomplete Google Business Profile, social media pages that haven’t posted in months, and businesses that have never even considered running ads.
These are all things YOU can take advantage of to get ahead.
Most Businesses Aren’t Even Trying
A lot of local businesses rely almost entirely on word of mouth.
There’s nothing wrong with that. The problem is that many businesses stop there.
Word of mouth, especially in 2025, is enough to keep a business alive, but is NOT enough to scale a business.
About 81% of consumers search a business online before they buy, meaning even people referred to your business will check you out online.
And if they're not impressed, you've just lost the sale.
You would reach more customers if you simply did the opposite of what most local businesses do.
The bar to stand out isn’t high, and has never been lower. In fact, there's one thing you can do to:
Get 75% More Clicks
When someone searches for something like: “roofer in Luton”...
Most of the clicks go to the first few results.
Roughly 75% of people click one of the top three listings.
Which means if you’re outside that group, you’re missing the majority of potential customers.
If you can push your business into those top position, even occasionally, enquiries increase quickly.
It's extremely easy to do nowadays. All you have to do is FULLY complete your Google Business Profile (even extra stuff like 'handicap parking accessibility' and link key information (phone number, location, hours) from your profile to your website by displaying that info prominently on your website.
This local business marketing strategy can be best summed up by one of my favourite quotes ever:
In The Land Of The Blind, The One-Eyed Man Is King
There’s an old saying:
“In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.”
Local marketing often works exactly like that.
If most businesses are barely visible online, the one that puts in a bit more effort suddenly becomes the obvious choice.
You don’t need perfect marketing. You just need to be slightly better than everyone else.
And 'slightly better than everyone else' means:
Fully completing your Google Business Profile
Regularly asking customers for reviews
Posting helpful content
Showing before & after work
Running a small ad campaign as long as you target the right people
Individually, these aren’t complicated. Put them together, and they put you ahead of most local competitors.
And when customers are choosing between abusiness with reviews, photos, and helpful content and one with an empty profile... the decision is pretty easy.
